No os asustéis con los siguientes mapas. Ni Francia ha conquistado España, ni las tropas americanas han regresado a Berlín. Ucrania no se ha tomado la justicia por sus propias manos y se ha hecho con el poder del Kremlin. Tampoco el mapa de la extinta Yugoslavia ha vuelto a sufrir modificaciones.
Por suerte o por desgracia a muchos de mi generación en Europa, conmigo incluido, nos ha tocado emigrar para ganarnos la vida y labrarnos un futuro a la altura de nuestra preparación académica.
Hace unos días, en un concurso televisivo, preguntaban a los concursantes cuál era el país que albergaba el mayor número de inmigrantes españoles. La respuesta era Francia. A raíz de esa pregunta me dediqué a investigar sobre los diferentes flujos migratorios en Europa, por lo que me dispuse a elaborar el siguiente mapa. Éste es el resultado:
PRINCIPAL DESTINO MIGRATORIO DE LOS PAÍSES EUROPEOS.
¿Qué significa este mapa, por tanto? Que el mayor número de españoles fuera de España se encuentra en Francia, de franceses en España, de italianos en Alemania o de alemanes en Estados Unidos. Esto se tendría que traducir en que un determinado país debería tener su más importante representación diplomática y su mayor red de consulados en el país donde se encuentren la mayoría de sus emigrantes, aunque la realidad nos manifiesta que, por regla general, priman bastante más los intereses políticos que salvaguardar los derechos de sus emigrantes en el extranjero.
A continuación os muestro las tendencias migratorias más destacadas que se observan en el mapa.
La proximidad geográfica
Los españoles eligen Francia y los franceses España. Los irlandeses viajan a Reino Unido, los polacos a Alemania y los búlgaros a Turquía. Los holandeses prefieren Alemania y los belgas Francia. Los inmigrantes de los países escandinavos parecen estar de acuerdo en que Suecia es el mejor país de la zona para emigrar. La cercanía a nuestra casa parece ser un factor determinante a la hora de decidir dónde emigrar.
Lazos históricos y lingüísticos.
La Unión Soviética sigue presente, en cierto modo, manteniendo su "temido telón de acero ideológico" sobre los países que no hace muchos años formaban parte del bloque comunista. Los emigrantes de Estonia, Letonia, Lituania, Ucrania, Kazakstán, Armenia, Georgia, etcétera, siguen escogiendo a Rusia como principal destino para emigrar. Los países de la antigua Checoslovaquia, República Checa y Eslovaquia, se intercambian inmigrantes. Rumanía tiene a Italia y a España como principales destinos. ¿Será la similitud de los idiomas un factor determinante?
Existencia de potencias globales.
Dicen que Alemania, país más poblado de la Unión Europea, es la locomotora de Europa. Quizá sea la principal razón por la que los inmigrantes de hasta un total de 11 países europeos ponen rumbo al país germano. Alemania es además el país que más inmigrantes recibe del mundo sólo por detrás de Estados Unidos y Rusia.
¿Y si lo intentamos fuera de Europa?
Sólo hay dos países de fuera de Europa que acogen la mayoría de inmigrantes de alguno de los paises de Europa. Australia es el destino de la mayoría de británicos y malteses, mientras que Estados unidos recibe la mayoría de inmigrantes de Alemania e Islandia.

Este mapa representa menor dificultad a la hora de analizar que el mapa de Europa. España, Estados Unidos y Argentina son los principales destinos migratorios de este continente,
Estados Unidos, como país que más inmigrantes recibe del mundo, lidera lógicamente los ranking de su continente como un todo, es decir, desde Canadá hasta Argentina. La mayoría de emigrantes de Colombia, Venezuela, Perú, Brasil y Guyana escogen Estados Unidos, además de ser la segunda opción para chilenos, ecuatorianos y argentinos.
España, con sus innegables lazos lingüísticos e históricos es el principal destino para los emigrantes de Argentina, Bolivia y Ecuador, siendo la segunda opción para venezolanos, uruguayos, paraguayos y peruanos.
Argentina, por proximidad y extensión geográfica, recibe a la mayoría de emigrantes de Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay.
No obstante Suriname y la Guyana francesa siguen optando por emigrar hacia sus históricos colonizadores: Países Bajos y Francia respectivamente.
¿Y que pasa con el mapa de Norteamérica, Centroamérica y Caribe?
No lo adjuntaré porque me resultaría muy monótono dibujar la bandera de Estados Unidos en todos y cada uno de los países de este continente. Desde Canadá a Panamá, pasando por Cuba y Guatemala, Estados Unidos sigue siendo y será por mucho tiempo el principal destino migratorio, pero ¿dónde van los estadounidenses? ¡A México! Parece que las playas de Cancún o Acapulco son demasiado apetecibles...

Fortunately or unfortunately many people within my generation in Europe, me included, have had to emigrate to earn a living and build a future up to our academic training.
Few days ago, in a game show, contestants asked what was the country that was home to the largest number of Spanish immigrants in the world. The answer was France. Following that question I started researching about the different migration flows in Europe, and created the map below. This is the result:
MAIN MIGRATORY DESTINATIONS IN EUROPE
These are the most important migration trends observed in the map.
Geographical proximity.
The Spaniards chose France and the French Spain. The Irish travel to UK, Polish to Germany and Bulgarians to Turkey. The Dutch go to Germany and Belgians to France. Immigrants from Scandinavia prefer Sweden as their main destination.
Historical and linguistic ties.
The Soviet Union is still present in a way, maintaining its "ideological iron curtain" on countries that not so long ago were part of the communist bloc. Emigrants from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, etc., continue to choose Russia as their main destination. The countries of the former Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, exchange immigrants with each other. Romanians have Italy and Spain as their main destinations. Will the similarity of their languages be a determining factor?
Existence of a global and regional power.
They say that Germany, most populous country of the European Union, is the growth locomotive of Europe. Perhaps that's the main reason why immigrants from a total of 11 European countries choose Germany as the first option to immigrate. Germany is on the top 3 of the countries that receive more immigrants in the world, standing only behind the United States and Russia.
What if we tried our chances outside of Europe?
Only two countries outside Europe receive the majority of immigrants from a country in Europe. Australia is the landing place of most British and Maltese, while United States receives most immigrants from Germany and Iceland.
SOUTH AMERICA'S MIGRATORIES DESTINATIONS
This map is slightly less difficult to analyse than the map of Europe. Spain, USA and Argentina are the main migratory destinations of the inhabitants of this continent,
United States, as the country that receives more immigrants in the world, leads logically the ranking of this continent as a whole, from Canada to Argentina. Most immigrants from Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and Guyana choose United States as their main destination, besides being the second choice for Chileans, Ecuadorians and Argentines.
Spain, with its undeniable linguistic and historical ties is the main destination for emigrants from Argentina, Bolivia and Ecuador, and the second option for emigrants of Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay and Peru.
Argentina, due to its geographical proximity, dimensions and regional influence, receives the majority of emigrants of Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
However Suriname and French Guyana still choose to migrate to their historical settlers: Netherlands and France respectively.
And what about the map of North America, Central America and Caribbean?
I will not attach the map because it would be very monotonous to draw the American flag in each of the countries of this continent. From Canada to Panama, going through Cuba and Guatemala, the United States remains and will remain the main migratory destination for a long time, but where do Americans go? To Mexico! Looks like the beaches of Cancun or Acapulco are too tempting ...
